In celebration of history and art (not to mention the Smithsonian’s free admission policy), hundreds of museums around the country open their doors to the public free of charge on Saturday March 12, 2016. Families can score entry to awesome NYC museums!

Here's how it goes: Go to the Smithsonian’s website ticket page and create an account (easy). Check on the left toolbar under "Museum Day" to click "Request Tickets." There, you may request Museum Day Live! tickets to one participating museum; two tickets will be permitted per email address/account (and they ask you limit one reservation per household). Click carefully—once you've formally requested, there's no going back to re-select a different option.

If you can't make it on the 12th, don't fret! Several NYC institutions offer free museum days regularly so families can save a little cash. Make sure to check out all the other free things to do with kids in the city to plan a whole day of frugal fun.

Here's the list of this year's participating museums in the NYC area:

Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum

Long Island Maritime Museum

Museum of the City of New York
