Young swan princesses start in pre-ballet classes. Ballet Hispanico
You can't get much more dramatic than the sweeping arms and quick-moving feet of the flamenco routines taught in this Spanish dance program. Bounding Boys at the Ailey School
aside, there's still a stigma against boys who are into ballet. That's why the famed Alvin Ailey academy offers this weekly lads-only class where graceful guys can improve coordination and rhythm with tumbling, music and movement. The best part? Broadway Dance Center

Kids constantly trying to copy the death-defying hip-hop moves on So You Think You Can Dance can sign up for a weekend course; Sunday classes are open to beginners, while kids with a bit more experience can bust a move on Saturdays. Fairies & Fantasy at In Grandma's Attic
If ballet conjures up images of cutthroat competition and a struggle for perfection, think again. Director Deborah Bailay fosters a lifelong love for movement with her alternative creative ballet program, which focuses as much on the imaginative aspects of performance as on dance technique. On a typical day, wee ballerinas—and ballerinos, too—listen to a classic fairy tale, then bring it to life through improvisational dance, costumes and props. Hip-Hop Dance at Brooklyn Arts Exchange
In this body-rockin' class classic and modern urban-dance techniques are blended with freestyle movements. All routines are set to kid-friendly tracks. Indian Dance with NYC Bhangra
Megha Kalia offers her Punjabi dance classes to tots around the city and the demand is high. (Brooklyn classes begin in the fall.) Youngsters learn the pulsating rhythm and dynamic steps of Indian dances like bhangra and giddha—all incorporate clapping, hopping and colorful costumes. One of the most high-energy classes at this company's new East Village home is traditional West African dance. With plenty of athletic moves—and no tutus—it's particularly appealing to boys.
