Looking for the best summer camps for your active kid? There are tons of sports camps around New York City that value running around—everything from basketball camps and tennis intensives to gymnastics programs and soccer camps. Sports camps to really look out for this summer include Asphalt Green (the Upper East Side facility is celebrating its 25th anniversary) and Basketball City (the downtown spot has a brand-new home with seven full-size courts).

Asphalt Green Camps

Children are divided into three age brackets: peewee (ages 4 to 6), junior (ages 6 to 8) and senior (ages 8 to 13). Dance and arts and crafts are on the bill of weekly activities, but the camp takes full advantage of its venue's top-notch athletic facilities. On a typical day, campers receive swim instruction, work up a sweat playing soccer, basketball, baseball or softball, and try out martial arts, yoga or gymnastics. Rather than focusing on a specific sport, children are treated to a wide variety of experiences. Expect a camp-wide celebration commemorating Asphalt Green’s 25th summer. • 555 E 90th St between York and East End Aves. 211 North End Ave between Murray and Warren Sts. Basketball City Summer Camp

Future b-ball stars will practice their jump shots in a state-of-the-art facility with seven full-size courts. Current and former professional basketball players, as well as high-school and college coaches, take campers under their wing and help them improve their dribbling, shooting and passing skills. Upon arrival each day, kids warm up with drills, play full-court league games and compete in friendly contests. Camp runs June 16–Aug 28, Mon–Fri 9am–4pm. One-week session $450–$475. Ages 7 to 17.

Brooklyn Boulders Adventure Weeks

This camp is made for kids who want to crawl the walls—literally. Campers learn bouldering, slacklining and rope-climbing basics as they scale the spot’s colorful rock-climbing walls. Brooklyn Fencing Center Camps

Campers begin the day with an athletic warm-up, followed by fencing exercises, matches, footwork lessons and tactical analysis of videotaped bouts. On some days they also receive short private lessons. Camp runs Jul 7–11, Jul 14–18, Jul 28–Aug 1, Aug 18–22 and Aug 25–29, Mon–Fri 10am–3pm. BumbleBee Tennis Clinic

Roger Federer and Serena Williams wanna-bes can learn tennis through age-appropriate skill-building exercises and drills. No worries if your youngster has never handled a racquet: Campers are taught the sport’s fundamentals and should come off the court with improved hand-eye coordination, timing, stamina and reflexes. Chelsea Piers Sports Academy

Not limited to any one activity, kids spend their summer here playing basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball and European team handball. While they develop their athletic chops, campers also pick up the social and technical skills they need for any sport. Camp runs June 16–Aug 29, Mon–Fri 8:30am–4pm. One-week session $750 before May 23, $810 thereafter. Multiple-week and sibling discounts are available. Downtown United Soccer Club

Future soccer stars sharpen their technical skills in the morning, then take a break at lunch to swim. This year, kids will participate in a Brazil World Cup competition. Atlantic Yachting Summer Sailing Camp

Swashbucklers cast off not once, but twice each day in this weeklong sailing camp, where groups of six or less will learn how to traverse open waters through races, games and trips to city landmarks (such as Lady Liberty). Between excursions, campers head back to dry land for lunch and free time, and on Friday, onboard counselors let kids man the ships all by themselves. Camp runs June 10–Aug 30, Mon–Fri 9am–3:30pm. Fantastic Gymnastics Camp

Up in the 92 Y’s brand-new Studio in the Sky, girls learn rhythmic gymnastics and practice navigating the balance beam and uneven bars. Boys stay busy mastering floor exercises as well as p-bars, rings, the high bar, the pommel horse and the vault. On the second Friday of each session, the children present an exhibition for friends and family. Camp runs June 26–Aug 15, Mon–Fri 9am–5pm. Fast Breaks Sports Summer Program

While this coed sports program is best known for its skill-honing development of basketball and flag football, its primary aim is to promote a lifelong love of sports. Fast Break’s brand-new 8,000-square-foot home is packed with tech gadgets such as in-depth video analysis, sensor-packed basketballs that measure force and spin, and an app that shows the optimal shooting style for every player. Young campers (ages 2½ to 3) will be based at the new HQ, while kids ages 4 to 8 play outdoors as much as possible. Camp runs mid-June–Sept; check website for details. Friends Seminary Skateboard Camp

Kids don’t have to be X Games–bound in order to pick up pointers in this program. When they’re not practicing in the school’s rooftop skate park, campers travel to spots around the city, like Brooklyn Banks, Astoria Skate Park and Heliport Skate Park, where they work on balance, footwork, safety and basic tricks. More advanced students can tackle ramps, grind rails boxes and hit the quarter pipe. Also, expect surprise sessions with pro riders. Camp runs June 9–13, July 7–11, July 14–18; Mon–Fri 10am–noon. Hudson River Community Sailing City Sail

Hydrophilic tykes will get lots of quality time on the high seas (well, on the Hudson) learning the mechanics of sailing. They’ll also play games—like Predator versus Prey and buoy races in the water—that reinforce what they’ve learned. Each week concludes with a sailing trip to the Statue of Liberty or the Palisades. Kids in Sports

This sporty camp offers various programs throughout the summer. Preschoolers learn the fundamentals of hockey, soccer and football, while older kids journey to Randall’s Island during the month of June for relay races, free play, and water games, plus music and crafts. At the 480-acre complex, children try out horseback riding, golf, tennis, soccer, and softball or baseball; each morning is devoted to a different sport. In the afternoon, campers get to let their sillies out with less-structured physical activities, such as kickball, Wiffle ball, gaga, Ping-Pong, miniature golf, badminton, horseshoes and more. Super Soccer Stars Drop-In Classes

Campers kick their way through activities like “soccer tennis,” partner drills and mini tournaments. Mini-camps mix craft projects and soccer skills development.
