New Yorkers are canine-crazy, and not just during the Westminster Dog Show or the Tompkins Square Park Halloween Dog Parade. If your family is traveling to New York City with its four-legged friend, take advantage of the many pet boutiques, grooming parlors, dog-friendly parks and pet-friendly hotels the city has to offer. Pet-friendly hotels are increasingly common, and many go the extra mile, offering special beds, meals, treats and even robes for visiting pooches and other pets.

The Benjamin Hotel

The Benjamin

  • Rated as: 4/5

All of the unfussy rooms in this pet-friendly hotel have kitchenettes with microwaves and sinks (some suites have full-size fridges), so it’s a hit with families as well as business travelers. The emphasis is on comfort: Choose from a menu of 12 pillows that includes buckwheat-filled, Swedish memory foam and antisnoring. You can even consult the sleep concierge, who will arrange for milk and cookies for your brood's late-night snack or a bedtime storybook to help them nod off. Four-legged guests get special treatment too: Among the petcentric perks are a choice of three types of beds, ceramic food bowls and even plush robes.

This modern 23-floor hotel is managed by Kimpton, which is known for its informal, friendly ethos and flamboyant decor; accommodations are surprisingly luxurious. Spacious family-sized rooms boast double queen beds, outfitted with dapper gray fabric headboards, and feel even more open thanks to floor-to-ceiling views. For an on-site bite, your crew can head to the Brighton, a boardwalk-style food court with a fish shack and a burger joint. When they're tuckered out after a busy day of sightseeing, kids can borrow cozy animal-print robes so they can curl up with Fido on his cute bone-motif bed. Bowls, leashes and toys are also provided for pets.

Hotel Pennsylvania

  • Price band: 2/4

As the official host hotel for the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (which is held every year in February at Madison Square Garden, directly opposite), the Penn won't raise an eyebrow when your brood checks in with your Chow Chow (or your Siamese, for that matter; it also puts up cats). Ask for the "Penn Loves Pets" package ($25 per pet, limit two), which includes a free treat and, for owners, a copy of Fido Friendly magazine. The 1,705-room behemoth, one of the city's largest hotels, is mere blocks from Macy's and the Empire State Building, making sightseeing a breeze with kids in tow. After a $7 million renovation in 2008, the rooms are still fairly modest, but offer pleasant respite from the hubbub outside.

Loews Regency Hotel New York

  • Price band: 3/4

Though it's closed for renovation until fall, the New York chapter of luxury chain Loews prides itself on its family-friendly policy and offers special services for kids and pets. Dogs and cats get their own bed, rawhide bones, scratching post and a room-service menu of vet-approved meals devised to counteract jet lag. Don't worry if you've left the leash at home—a variety of accoutrements can be bought or borrowed. However, you will have to pay a $25 room-cleaning fee.

Soho Grand Hotel

  • Rated as: 3/5
  • Price band: 3/4

A brace of bronze Great Danes guards the lobby of the SoHo Grand, which pioneered the downtown hotel migration in 1996. The hotel's founding family was once in the pet-food business, so it stands to reason that animals are welcome here: Cats and dogs are provided with a size-appropriate bed, free food and treats. (If you lack an animal companion, your family can request an in-room goldfish.) Original designer Bill Sofield recently updated all the rooms, introducing new custom pieces, such as travel-trunk-inspired minibars and natty houndstooth tuxedo chairs. Families can also borrow vintage-inspired bicycles in the warmer months to explore the city; after your exertions, claim a lounger and chill with Fido in the hotel's seasonal outdoor bar/eatery the Yard. In May, the hotel debuts its new dog park, complete with custom-made benches and "fire hydrants."
