SATURDAY, APRIL 14

Children's Carnival
Trek out to this working farm for a country carnival, held in the orchard. Among the festive offerings are amusement rides, midway games and a magic show in the barn (2, 3, 4, 5pm). Sat Apr 14 11am--6pm. Queens County Farm Museum. $10. All ages.

J-cation 2012: Sakura
The third annual Japan Society fest celebrates all things spring, especially sakura (cherry blossoms), as 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the gift of cherry trees Japan bestowed on Washington, D.C., and the Upper West Side. Throughout the day, families can take part in workshops teaching shodo (traditional Japanese calligraphy; 11:30am--5:30pm) and origami, basic Japanese language lessons (3:15--6pm) and, something kids will especially love, kamishibai (picture card storytelling; 11:20am--1:40pm). A Hana-mi Lounge will be set up all day offering beverages and snacks for sale as various Japanese instrumentalists play in the background. Older kids may want to stick around (or come back) for a concert with pop-rocker Alex York and Japanese girl band the Suzan (8--10pm). Note that main-stage presentations and workshops have a limited capacity and are on a first-come, first-served basis. Sat Apr 14 11am--11pm. Japan Society. $10, children ages 2--11 $5, chidren under 2 free. All ages.
