SATURDAY, APRIL 28

Run for the Wild 2012
If your kids aren't up for a full-on 5K run, don't worry. The Bronx Zoo is organizing a tot-friendly course for families and casual runners. In addition to raising money to protect endangered lions out in Africa, participants can enjoy a full day of activities at the zoo, from refreshments and music to the zoo's famous African Plains exhibit. Sat Apr 28 at 8:45am. Bronx Zoo Wildlife Conservation Society. $35, children $25, under 3 free. All ages.

Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival
Happening rain or shine, this weekend celebration of Japanese culture is legendary. The blooming cherry blossom esplanade isn't the only amazing sight: Many visitors dress up for the occasion, meaning fabulous traditional finery and cutting-edge anime outfits give the foliage some fierce competition. Lots of special programming's on tap—tea ceremonies, taiko drumming, presentations on manga art and flower arranging, and live dance. Sat Apr 28 10am--6pm. Brooklyn Botanic Garden. $15, students $10, children under 12 free. All ages.

Tribeca ESPN Sports Day
At the sixth annual sports day sponsored by ESPN and the Tribeca Film Festival, fans of all ages can meet mascots and members of the New York Knicks, the Harlem Wizards and WNBA's New York Liberty, who will be leading coaching clinics. Happily, plenty more sports games and activities (including skateboarding lessons with Uncle Funky Boards) will help your little rookies burn off carb-centric snacks from the adjacent TFF Street Fair. And for kiddie road warriors, a "Wheels of Freestyle" BMX stunt show is sure to please. Sat Apr 28 10am--6pm. North Moore St between Greenwich and West Sts (212-941-2400, tribecafilm.com). Subway: 1 to Franklin St; 2, 3 to Chambers St. Free. All ages.

Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair
You don't have to be in a dark movie theater to enjoy the Tribeca Film Festival: The big-time movie fest sponsors this annual street fair, featuring cast members of Ghost the Musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and Wicked, plus an army of stilt walkers, dancers, face painters, storytellers and sculptors. Children keep busy building kites and chasing bubbles, posing for photos on the official red carpet and listening to original works from the New York Philharmonic's Very Young Composers ensemble. Not enough? Have them try out a life-size chess board, or enjoy performances by the acrobats of Cirque-tacular and Ronnie Asbell's Puppetronics. Sat Apr 28 10am--6pm. Greenwich St between Chambers and Hubert Sts (212-941-2400, tribecafilm.com). Subway: 1 to Franklin St; 2, 3 to Chambers St. Free. All ages.

Fifth Avenue Family Festival
Little Slopers can enjoy face painting and puppet making (with pizza boxes), try out Fuze bicycle art (one person sits on the bike, the other squeezes a tube of paint), hear live bands and get their snapshot taken alongside Star Wars--costumed volunteers. The first 200 kids snag a gratis gift bag. Sat Apr 28 11am--4pm. Fifth Ave at 4th St, Park Slope, Brooklyn (718-768-3703, parkslopefifthavenuebid.com). Subway: R to Union St. Free; food, games and bouncy house cost extra. All ages.

New York Children's Theater Festival
Debuting this spring, the New York Children's Theater Festival showcases new works for kids. Today's show will be a production of Scheme of the Super Bullies, an interactive musical that follows Princess Dodgeball as she spars with mad scientist Countess Von Cooties. Sat Apr 28 11am, 2pm. . $18. All ages.

Jack and Jill Festival
Manhattan's Jack and Jill School holds its annual spring fair, complete with carnival rides, arts and crafts, food and games. Sat Apr 28 noon--4pm. Jack and Jill School, 209 E 16th St between Second and Third Aves (212-475-0855, jackandjillschool.com). Subway: L to Third Ave. Free; rides cost extra. Ages 1 to 8.

Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art Festival
The annual two-day event attracts illustration lovers with its wide selection of comics, mini-comics, graphic novels, animation and original artwork. Older kids might also be interested in attending signings and panel discussions featuring artists and experts. Sat Apr 28 11am--6pm. Lexington Avenue Armory. $15 per day, both days $24; in advance $12 per day, both days $18. Ages 10 and up.

Touch-a-Truck Brooklyn
Here's a rare chance for kids to climb inside and explore the workings of an FDNY fire-education truck, an NYPD police car, a dump truck, an Airstream trailer, an ambulance, vintage pickups and other roadsters. Kids who aren't as enthused about automotives can munch on food from delicious NYC gourmet food trucks. Proceeds benefit P.S. 295's art programs. Sat Apr 28 noon--5pm. PS 295, The Studio School of Arts and Culture. $5. All ages.
