Watch competitors stuff their faces with franks at the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

  • Free

Since 1916, Nathan's flagship restaurant on Coney Island has hosted this gut-busting competitive-eating showdown. Celebrate our nation’s independence by joining an estimated 40,000 viewers in watching people stuff their faces with franks—reigning champ Joey Chestnut is back in action after winning his sixth contest and tying for the honor of Most Consecutive Wins last year. The flagship location of Nathan’s Famous was hit hard by Sandy and had to close for part of the season, but despite the setback, the company will still make its usual donation of 100,000 hot dogs to the Food Bank for New York City. All ages.

Welcome back Lady Liberty

  • Price band: 1/4

After suffering enormous damage when Hurricane Sandy hit in October 29, the Statue of Liberty will reopen for the first time since the storm on July 4. (If you remember, the statue was set to reopen on October 28, 2012, just one day before the superstorm hit, after being closed for a yearlong renovation.) Visitors will, once again, have access to the statue's crown, pedestal, observation deck, museum and grounds; there will also be limited access to Ellis Island. Online reservations to the statue are strongly encouraged; tickets are on sale at statuecruises.com

Settle in for a summer blockbuster on the big screen

Parents, rest assured. Even with the end of Potter and the two-year wait for Finding Dory, there are plenty of movies for families to see the summer. Films that will most likely be on your child's must-see list include animated sequels and spin-offs like Monsters University, Despicable Me 2, The Smurfs 2 and Planes. Look for matinee prices at select theaters around the city to keep the cost down.

Cool off at a city beach

One of your best bets for a staycation this summer—take a day trip to one of the city's best beaches (or another nearby shores) to enjoy sand, surf and more. Dine at a local Russian eatery while visiting Brighton Beach, run through the sprinkles at the Sea Turtle Fountain on Midland Beach and enjoy acres of sand at Rockaway Beach, which reopened after being hit hard by Sandy earlier this season (the boardwalk and area's playgrounds are still in the process of being rebuilt but there are temporary concessions and bathrooms set up).
