Figment NYC at Governors Island

The weather was warm and sunny for this weekend’s Figment festival—and families flooded Governors Island for tons of free activities, like the artist-designed “State of the Art” minigolf course and the CMA art-making outpost. Little ones had free reign of the Interactive Sculpture Garden, making music and digging in the dirt with kinetic pieces that rotated, bounced, swung and blew in the wind. Curious kids also explored the fest’s many whimsical outdoor spaces, crawling into the colorful TreeHouse, itty-bitty tents, a gigantic teepee, and the you’d-have-to-see-it-to-believe-it City of Dreams Pavilion, which is constructed from recycled milk jugs and water bottles. After they wandered the parade grounds, families headed to the open-air food court to grab a bite from an assortment of food trucks or to the costume tent to snag gratis dress-up gear. Figment’s trademark eccentric spirit was definitely in the air—impromptu dance parties broke out on the lawn, folks traipsed around in rainbow-bright costumes, and a “mobile art vehicle” bearing a giant papier-mâché toad blasted music as it drove through the island.
