Lighting of the Coney Island Parachute Jump, June 2013

While we’re still a few months away from menorahs and Christmas trees, Coney Island celebrated its holiday season on Friday, June 21 at the lighting of the historic Parachute Jump. New York’s supreme bastion of summertime welcomed the $2 million dollar renovation with fireworks, a ceremony hosted by Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz and, of course, tons of rides and games at the Parachute Jump’s home, Luna Park. Having been ramped up from just 450 lights to 8,000, the landmark now features rhythmic patterns that can even be seen from outer space. Scroll through our photos from Friday’s fete (and watch our video below), then be sure to plan a trip to see “Brooklyn’s Eiffel Tower” yourself.
