Go ahead, call it a comeback: after suffering innumerable damage due to Hurricane Sandy last October, a few of Coney Island’s most historic institutions will reopen this weekend. Luna Park, home of the 86-year-old coaster the Cyclone, heralds the new season with their annual egg cream christening and free rides to the first 100 guests on Sunday, March 24. Head to Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park for the Blessing of the Rides Ceremony at 11am on Saturday, March 23, followed by a free go on the eponymous Ferris wheel. And while the original Nathan’s Famous on Surf Ave is still closed for renovations, it’ll likely reopen before Memorial Day. In the meantime, hungry park-goers can get their hot dog fix at the boardwalk location. Also expecting a late spring opening: the New York Aquarium, whose recovery is estimated to cost a staggering $65 million, the legendary Totonno’s Pizzeria, the B&B Carousell, and Coney Island USA, the 1917 landmark building and home of the arts nonprofit.
