Does your little one both play with her toys and wonder how they work, or even invent her own? Starting this June, creative kids with a yen for design and engineering can head to the New York Hall of Science’s new permanent exhibition, the Design Lab, to learn all about the workings of the world around them. The complex, set to open in early to mid-June, will completely transform the beloved institution's lower-level Central Pavilion.

The Design Lab will consist of five distinct pods, each with a niche set of activities for young visitors. Builders will find their niche in the Sandbox by creating structures big enough to stand in, or can get busy constructing circuits for a model city in the Studio. Scientists can explore gravity, shape and air resistance in the Treehouse, while theatrically inclined artists will learn to create a performance using light, shadow and motion at the Backstage pod. Designers can turn their imagined creations into real ones in the Maker Space, which opened in 2012. We're guessing that the construction of the Design Lab owes much to the great success of Maker Space over the past two years.
