The outlandish haberdashery on display—ten-foot-tall hats, costumed pets, bonnets with live birds nestled inside—more than makes up for the lack of floats at this annual see-and-be-seen parade. The tradition started in the mid-1800s, when high-society ladies would promenade in their Easter finery after church, and has since evolved into a showcase for chapeau artistry. Fifth Ave from 49th to 57th Sts. All ages.
If your family is looking for more excitement than bonnets and pastels this Easter, take an alternate approach with this quirky four-day carnival by the creator of Nightmare Haunted House. Games like "Egg Putt," “Hare-y Up” (where you can race an actual rabbit while wearing a giant tortoise shell) and “The Keister Bunny” (which involves pulling candy from an Easter bunny’s backside) lead up to the main event, an egg-hunt cage match where participants must battle rabbit-costumed challengers in a 16-by-20-foot steel cage. Collect as many eggs (filled with cash and prizes!) as you can while outwitting your competitor. There will also be food trucks, game booths and live entertainment. Ages 6 and up.
Tots can learn about 150 years of Jewish history as they visit the Eldridge Street Synagogue, the Jewish Daily Forward building, and the founding site of the B'nai B'rith. Meet at the southwest corner of Essex and Delancey Sts. Ages 8 and up.
Kids can get their zoo fix at free family workshops on Sundays at the Prospect Park Zoo. Learn about animals and nature through art projects, insect observation and snow play in the winter months, all led by zoo educators and trained teen Discovery Guides. Participants will receive a nature play activity guide to Prospect Park highlighting areas like the Zucker Natural Exploration Area for further adventures. Ages 2–7.
