New York City public schools are closed from April 6 through April 15. Here's how to keep your kids busy on the cheap!

Kids' Week in Staten Island
Kids learn about nature and explore the 222-acre Blue Heron Park, a sanctuary filled with wetland ponds, swamps and streams. The Urban Park Rangers present a different theme every day, with complementary activities including a rock safari, a nature drawing session and a bug identification station. Tue Apr 10 10am--3pm. Blue Heron Nature Center. Free. Ages 5 and up.

Especially For Kids Daily Screenings
Families are invited to the museum's screening room to view a collection of Native American animated shorts, such as "Neil Discovers the Moon" and "How the Chipmunk Got Its Stripes." After, spend some time exploring the museum's exhibits. Tue Apr 10 at 10:30, 11:45am. National Museum of the American Indian. Free. All ages. 

Kids' Week at Marine Park
 Urban Park Rangers present a different workshop each day, touching on themes like reptiles and amphibians, botany and nocturnal animals. Tue Apr 10 11am--5pm. Salt Marsh Nature Center. Free. Ages 5 and up.

Toe-Tappin' Tuesdays: Dixieland Jazz with the Gotham Jazzmen
Got rhythm? Head to Lincoln Center, where every Tuesday the Gotham Jazzmen play through a swinging set of old standards. Tue Apr 10 noon--1:30pm. New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Free. All ages.

Blooming Naturalists
Kids follow their natural instincts on their quest to discover plant and animal life in the park. The budding wildlife experts will make nature journals and learn tools of the trade. Tue Apr 10 noon--4pm. . Free. Ages 6 and up.

Spring Sprouts
Celebrate the (relatively) warm weather with this seed-planting workshop. Kids learn all about the nascent shoots, from how they grow to which types can be planted at home. Then they'll make crafty creations using their seeds. Tue Apr 10 noon--4pm. . Free. Ages 3 and up.

Castle and Its Kingdom Tour
Navigate the lands surrounding Belvedere Castle on a guided tour that teaches the history and nature of the sprawling 55-acre urban oasis. Tue Apr 10 12:30--1:30pm. Central Park, Belvedere Castle. Free. All ages.

French-Language Storytime at Book Culture
Want your petit fleur to pick up some Franais? A rotating cast of speakers lead this popular weekly story hour in the Romance language. French children's books are also available for sale. Tue Apr 10 at 4pm. Book Culture. Free. Ages 2 to 6.
