Ice Carving Week at the Bronx Zoo

Since the kids have off from school for another week, why not head to the Bronx Zoo for their annual Ice Carving Week? The festivities, which begin on December 26 and wrap up on December 31, include ice-carving demos with a master sculptor (this year's theme is animals from the Arctic, including caribous, arctic foxes and snowy owls); the polar bear–themed Ice Playground, featuring a 25-foot slide made of ice; a display of giant bowhead whales, with whom families are encouraged to snap pics; and an igloo that gives kids an inside look at the dwellings of Alaska's Inuits.

RECOMMENDED: Comprehensive winter break activities for kids

On Saturday, December 28, the Salute to Wildlife Ice Carving Competition lets little ones watch as ten-plus pro ice sculptors create elaborate wildlife sculptures from simple blocks of ice. While you're at the zoo, don't miss the enrichment program Presents to the Animals, holiday carolers, craft sessions where kids can make their own snow globe, and the 4-D Ice Age double feature: Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs followed by Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas (daily through January 4). Consider bringing a toy for the zoo's annual toy drive as well; for each toy you bring, you'll get a free ticket for your next visit to the Bronx Zoo.
