Ice Carving Week at the Bronx Zoo

Rather than hunkering down for a long, cold winter, the Bronx Zoo is embracing the onset of the coldest months by bringing back its wildlife-themed Ice Carving Week, a celebration of all things icy. The five-day event (Dec 26–30) is jam-packed with demonstrations, competitions and activities, all inspired by the frozen stuff and the animals who thrive alongside it. Families will be able to watch experienced ice carving artists turn bulky blocks of ice into delicate, glimmering animal statues. Among the especially kid-friendly offerings, tots can climb onto the giant walrus-themed ice throne for a photo op or slide down the 25-foot long ice slide surrounded by frozen sculptures of waves, sea turtles, sharks, sea lions and more. At Sprout’s Kindness Counter, kids are invited to create a holiday greeting card for the men and women of the U.S. military. On December 29, youngsters can meet Apollo and CowBella from the Pajanimals. And when it comes time to warm up, lead your chilled family to the Bronx Zoo’s 4D Theater for a screening of The Polar Express 4D Experience (through Jan 6).
