Kid-friendly Super Bowl Boulevard was worth the wait (slide show)

However crazy the idea was to transform Times Square into Super Bowl Central, it's been pulled off well, judging by our visit this afternoon.

Super Bowl Boulevard: Highlights from the New York Super Bowl event in Times Square

In honor of the biggest sports game of the year being played a stone's throw away in the Meadowlands, New Jersey, Broadway between 34th and 47th Streets has been transformed into the much-talked-about, and sometimes derided, Super Bowl Boulevard. We dropped by this afternoon, and got a bit caught up in the festivities ourselves, as you can see by scrolling through our photos in the slide show above. Kids played in a tented Rush Zone, got autographs signed by NFL players, had photo ops with the Vince Lombardi Trophy (and by donning the uniformed "body" of an NFL player) and, perhaps most fun (and unfootball-y) of all, took gleeful runs down a massive, 60-foot toboggan run between 40th and 41st Streets ($5, must be at least 36” tall). See the NFL website for the full schedule of events.

As if that weren't enough, the nearby Toys"R"Us Times Square is offering face-painting, caricatures, trivia, cookie decorating and Super Bowl–themed merchandise through Friday, January 31.

If you have any energy left after your visit, head down to Bryant Park's PepsiCo Super Bowl Celebration for free music, food and performances. (Note that after today, that extravaganza is only open on Saturday, the day before Super Bowl XLVIII.)

Super Bowl Boulevard is open from noon to 10pm daily through Sat Feb 1. Note that advance online registrationhas closed, so you must register with staff upon arrival.
