A summer-long performance and workshop series on the Lower East Side prefaces the grand opening of the Manny Cantor Community Center.
Tue Jul 9 2013
Tuesday, July 9 marks the start of a new outdoor series for LES families, where storytimes, sing-a-longs, puppet shows and kid-friendly concerts will make up weekdays in Seward Park. The free events, sponsored by the Educational Alliance, cater to all ages (some are just for adults as well) and kick off with a librarian-led hour of stories and songs for toddlers on Tuesdays (July 9, 16, 23, and 30 at 10am), family exercises with PopFit Kids on Thursdays (July 11, 18, 25 and Aug 1 at 10am), and time to play with puppets, music and clowns on Fridays (weekly at 10am).
The series also includes special performances by the Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre (July 12), a sing-along with Gina from Compass Arts (July 19), jazz artist Oran Etkin and Timbalooloo (July 26), clown duo Sammie & Tudie (Aug 2), plus an adult-friendlier series of Wednesday night concerts featuring LES-based artists Dave Fields & Friends (July 10), Grupo Loisaida (July 17), Paul Shapiro & Friends (July 24) and Min Xiao-Fen’s Blue Pipa Trio (July 31).

The pop-up events provide a sampling of what's to come with the grand opening of the Manny Cantor Center, a new community space opening up in December. Located at 197 East Broadway, it will offer kids' classes and camps, art galleries, a fitness center and a space for perfomances, lectures and celebrations.
