Summer Streets

Summer Streets, the annual car-free block party which we named one of our favorite free things to do with kids this summer, returns in August for three consecutive Saturdays—August 3, 10 and 17.

RECOMMENDED: 50 things to do in the summer with the kids

This year's event is sure to be one for the history books, as it will be the first time that the Park Avenue Tunnel will be open to pedestrians. The 1,400-foot-long tunnel, which stretches from East 33rd to 40th Streets, was constructed in 1834 as a railway tunnel, but has since been relegated to one-way car traffic. During Summer Streets, the space (sans traffic!) will play host to Voice Tunnel, an interactive contemporary art installation by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. Particiants can use voice commands to operate a spotlight and speaker system that will project their individual voices onto the surface of the tunnel in a sensory combination of light and sound.

Other must-see art installations along the seven-mile stretch include CoolStop, a ten-foot fire hydrant mist system; Course of Emotions, an NYC-themed mini golf course; and Art Within One Mile, a self-guided tour to public artwork displays along the entire route.

In addition, kids and parents will want to check out the different rest stops along the route. There, they'll find everything from a Banana Boat and Slip & Slide (Uptown Rest Stop) to Whole Food samples (Midtown Rest Stop) and an REI Adventure Zone (Soho Rest Stop). Summer Streets takes place during the first three Saturdays of August (Aug 3, 10 and 17) from 7am–1pm from the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and other streets.
