City Bakery's Hot Chocolate Festival kicks off Friday, February 1
Thu Jan 31
Enjoy 28 days of creative cocoa flavors, from lemon and ginger to Vietnamese cinnamon, at City Bakery's annual Hot Chocolate Festival. Few good things come out of freezing February weather, but City Bakery's 21st annual Hot Chocolate Festival, which kicks off on February 1, is certainly one of them. Each day of the month, owner Maury Rubin prepares a different cocoa flavor (this year you can expect caramel, banana peel and the white-chocolate "Ode to the Polar Bear," among others). Kids will want to pair their drink with one of Rubin's specialty pretzel croissants or homemade marshmallows. Which of the 28 flavors will be your brood's favorite? Tell us in the comments section below! The Hot Chocolate Festival takes place February 1–28 at City Bakery. Winter Jam 2013 in Central Park (slide show)
Tue Jan 29
Kids and parents (and Fido, too!) reveled in cold-weather activities and romped in the snow at Central Park's Winter Jam 2013. Last year's festival may have been canceled due to high temperatures, but this year's warm spell thankfully held off long enough for New Yorkers to enjoy Winter Jam 2013. On Saturday, January 26, the NYC Parks Department, Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) and Gore Mountain Ski Resort transformed Central Park into a winter wonderland, complete with a thick blanket of snow. During the annual winter-sports celebration, we spotted kids sledding, enjoying gratis snowboarding and cross-country skiing sessions, checking out a Quidditch match and playing with their pooches in the first-ever Doggie Snow Zone. Click through our slideshow to see if you can spot your bundled-up brood—and if you missed Winter Jam 2013, rest assured that there are still plenty more ways to enjoy Central Park this season. American Legends Family Opening (slide show)
Tue Jan 29
The Whitney Museum of American Art invited families to a special opening event on January 26 to fete its show "American Legends: From Calder to O'Keeffe." The latest show at the Whitney Museum of American Art, "American Legends: From Calder to O'Keeffe," is in itself reason enough to get your crew to the museum, but this past weekend families were treated to an extra-special family opening to celebrate the exhibition. Kids and their parents got a tour of the show, learning about iconic artists such as Charles Demuth, Frank Stella and Georgia O'Keeffe through the works on view. They also took part in gallery activities, got to work making art in a workshop and enjoyed refreshments. See if you can find your family by clicking through our slide show. If you didn't go but wish you had, the Whitney's got another family event, "Sinister Pop" Family Day, scheduled for February 9, 2013. Family Day: Carnival of the Elephants (slide show)
Tue Jan 29
Families flocked to Bard Graduate Center to pay homage to the mighty elephant in the center's Carnival of the Elephants on Saturday, January 26. The big top isn't the only place in town to get your circus on. Families found that out this past Saturday, January 26, when they kids and their parents made their way to the Bard Graduate Center to take part in the center's Family Day: Carnival of the Elephants event, held in conjunction with the exhibition "Circus and the City: New York, 1793-2010," an exhibit that closes on Sunday, February 3. Kids learned about pachyderms from a zoo expert, watched a puppet show about an elephant who finds work in an NYC circus, made their own shadow puppet and noshed on healthy snacks. See if you can find your child amid the fun by clicking through our slide show.
