Local kids invited to enter Earth Day contests
Wed Mar 3
These days, most of us are trying to teach our kids that Earth Day should be every day. To support that point, Brooklyn community group Town Square is sponsoring three eco-centric contests as part of its annual Go Green! Greenpoint! celebration. Local writers ages 7 to 18 (from any borough) are asked to submit essays about Earth Day for a chance to win 50 bucks and a feature story in Greenpoint Gazette . The winner will also get a chance to read the piece at this year's Go Green! Greenpoint! fest , scheduled for Sunday, April 25 at the nabe's McCarren Park. Submissions must be received by April 9. There are also green-themed art and science competitions open to folks of all ages (broken down by age so kids won't end up going head-to-head with adults). For those, submit an entry form by April 18, then bring your design/invention/science project/artwork to the festival on the 25th to be judged. Entry forms can be picked up at the Flying Squirrel ( 96 N...
Wednesday's pick of the day: Judy Collins
Wed Mar 3
Anyone else out there remember when Judy Collins guest starred on the Muppet Show back in the day? The legendary folk singer has been delighting kids (as well as adults) for generations now. This afternoon, you can catch the luminous vocalist in person at the Tribeca Barnes & Noble , where she'll be reading from her new picture book, Over the Rainbow , and sing a couple of tunes, too (including, we assume, one originally made famous by a totally different Judy in The Wizard of Oz ).
Lizards and Snakes return to AMNH this Saturday
Tue Mar 2
It's still a tad too chilly to trek around the zoo. So if your kids need a live animal fix, head to the American Museum of Natural History , where the annual " Lizards and Snakes Alive " exhibition reopens on Saturday. More than 60 live squamates will be on display, including a super-impressive 14-foot Burmese python. Your kids can also gawk at four varieties of geckos, and play around with cool, interactive stations where they can test their knowledge of the reptiles or see the world through their cold-blooded eyes. After your visit, head over to another awesome, enriching exhibition—" Traveling the Silk Road "—where you kid can catch another live critter: the silkworm.
Tuesday's pick of the day: Good Night, Sleep Tight Lecture
Tue Mar 2
As parents, we've all been there: The endless nights of crying. Inconsolable baby...hell, inconsolable mommy and daddy! If you're longing for a good night's sleep (or even half of one), hire a sitter and head to Moomah in Tribeca for an adults only chat with Kim West . The author of Good Night, Sleep Tight shares her take on how to cure little insomniacs. Snacks, and hopefully solace, will be provided. Reservations required.
