Thursday's pick of the day: Lumpy Bumpy Pumpkin
Thu Oct 29
At this point, your family's schedule for this weekend is likely jam-packed with Halloween happenings—and who has time to go see a show with all that spooktacular fun on the itinerary? That's why you should take in some theatrical thrills with your brood today at Shadow Box Theatre's presentation of The Lumpy Bumpy Pumpkin . The show includes plenty of music (sing-alongs, too), as the actors tell the tale of an oddly-shaped pumpkin who, in true Ugly Duckling style, learns to accept himself for who he is—lumps, bumps and all.
A new store for Crewcuts
Thu Oct 29
We've been fans of Crewcuts — J.Crew 's line for little prepsters—for years, so we were excited to hear that the company recently opened a flagship location on the Upper East Side . Besides carrying the full collection for boys and girls, the 2,200-square-foot space will host art installations, sell wooden toys from Kid O and offer private shopping appointments. We recently spoke to Jenny Cooper, the company's head children's designer, about some of the store's coolest elements, which styles will be popular for fall and how her young sons, Walker, 7, and Miller, 5, feel about fashion. Tell us about the new location. How is it different from other Crewcuts outposts? Well, we really tried to make the store an exciting experience for both kids and parents. We have drawers of Schleich animals for little hands to rummage through while Mom and Dad shop. We've also added whimsical touches to our dressing rooms. One is covered with telephones that play...
Free things to do on Election Day with your kids
Thu Oct 29
We're always surprised that there aren't more special events planned on the random days that public schools are closed. Election Day is a holiday and yet there don't seem to be any special kids' matinees or festivals (perhaps we'll throw one next year!). It's supposed to be mild weather-wise, so you can hit the parks after you vote ( make sure you read our take on the candidates first ). But if your brood tires of playing, here are a number of free activities to keep them busy and you on budget. The folks at Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park are holding a mock mayoral election aimed squarely at minors. Citizens of all ages can mark their ballots for the candidate of their choice, then celebrate democracy with a slice of cake. The results will be announced at 4 p.m. The preschool set can listen (and feel!) as Amy Guglielmo and Julie Appel read from their latest Touch the Art book, Catch Picasso's Rooster at the Tribeca Barnes & Noble. An age...
Polar Rink and Seaport Ice will not be back this ice-skating season
Thu Oct 29
We're currently updating our roundup of the best ice-skating rinks in the city and we're sorry to say that two spots that were just unveiled last season won't be back. Although the websites for the American Museum of Natural History's Polar Rink —which featured a recyclable synthetic surface in lieu of ice—and Seaport Ice have not been updated with this info, the folks answering the phone confirm that neither rink will reopen this year. Thankfully stalwarts such as Rock Center , Wollman and Chelsea Piers aren't going anywhere!
