Indie film series for NYC kids
Tue Jan 5
A number of wonderful film series aimed at families have popped up in recent years. The programming is a mix of classics ( Yellow Submarine ), shorts ( The Red Balloon ), foreign gems (Miyazaki's 1971 Animal Treasure Island ) and domestic indie projects. While some of the material may be available through Netflix or even via iTunes, the founders of these series believe that preserving the cinema-house experience is important for the younger generation. What better time to take advantage of some communal cultural education than January, when you're looking for an excuse to get out of the apartment, but you just can't take another ear-splitting blockbuster. Here's a look at the smaller, special films playing around town this month .

Win a Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs prize package
Mon Jan 4
Did you see the movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs last fall? If you have kids, you probably did. Admittedly, Sony Pictures cinematic adaptation of Judi and Ron Barrett's beloved children's book did stray from the source materials. But kids loved the new characters, especially Steve the monkey, and parents definitely dug Bill Hader as an adorkable inventor. To mark the film's release on DVD this week, Time Out Kids is giving away a tasty prize package, which includes the flick, a "ratbird" plush toy, a copy of the book The Art and Making of Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and the eponymous game for the Wii .
