What to do this weekend: Dec 5-6 event picks
Fri Dec 4
Sing it with us now: It's the most wonderful time...of the year! If you haven't checked out the holiday displays and windows around the city, this may be the weekend to do it. Looking for some holiday events? We've got plenty. Even though Rock Center's tree was lit earlier this week, other illuminations are taking place this weekend, including the Pond at Bryant Park and the Old Stone House . If you're looking to get some holiday shopping done, check out a bunch of holiday fairs happening this weekend, including markets in Cobble Hill and Fort Greene . If you're looking for some non-holiday fun, get your groove on with Moey at two free performances (at FAO and the JCC ), or chill out with Brooke Shields at her reading of It's the Best Day Ever, Dad! at the Apple store. Free admission to the New Museum tomorrow
Fri Dec 4
The weather outside tomorrow promises to be frightful, so why not spend the morning in a beautiful, indoor space? From 10am to noon at the New Museum's First Saturday for Families , youngsters can view the wacky, fantastical works in the museum-wide exhibition " Urs Fischer: Marguerite de Ponty " free-of-charge. During an art workshop, they can transform ordinary objects into masterful works of art. Parents of infants should be warned: Strollers won't be allowed in the galleries (you'll have to check them in the lobby), so you might want to sport a sling. For a preview of what your brood will see, check out our slideshow .
Friday's pick of the day: free Sippy Cups concert!
Fri Dec 4
The Jimmies and They Might Be Giants both performed yesterday . But if you still haven't gotten your fill of cool kid crooners this week, head to Tribeca to catch the Sippy Cups in a no-cost show at Babesta Cribz. In addition to rocking out to the band's punky tunes, families can peruse the shop's funky wares, which we featured in our 2009 holiday gift guide . Now that's music to our ears!
Hear the Young People's Chorus of New York on Dora the Explorer
Thu Dec 3
Like every single TV series this season, Dora the Explorer is doing a holiday episode. But "Dora's Christmas Carol Adventure," which premieres Sunday, December 6 at 8pm on Nickelodeon, has a cool NYC tie-in: The Young People's Chorus of New York—which features local crooners from diverse backgrounds—will be adding some "fa-la-la-la-las" to the show's "doo-doo-doo-Dora" theme song. Hear the special holiday rendition below. If you're interested in catching YCP in person this season, the group is appearing this Sunday, December 6 at 7pm at the 92nd Street Y and singing (for free!) at the Carl Schurz Park tree lighting next Sunday, December 13 at 5pm.
