Download a free holiday song by the Sippy Cups

    Mon Dec 21

If you're tired of hearing your kid's favorite holiday tunes on a loop, you can add a new track to that playlist...for free. One of our favorite kindie bands , the Sippy Cups, recorded a cover of the Velvet Underground classic "I'm Waiting for the Man," with a few ho-ho-ho-inspired changes (and none of the drug references). Retitled, "Waiting for My Man (The Santa Claus Mix)," it's about counting down the minutes until the big guy in red arrives. To mix things up during the recording session, the band members switched instruments. The resulting garage-band sound will have holiday-ed out parents singing, "Hallelujah!" Download the song at the Sippy Cups website .

    Last-minute gift idea: video games!

    Mon Dec 21

If you're still struggling to find the perfect gift for the kids in your life, may we remind you about the wonder of video games? Seriously, we just gave a few to a tween we know and received a truly ecstatic response. They're an ideal offering for a number of reasons: kids love them, they'll keep tykes entertained during the winter break, and finally, they are super easy to find. We suggest choosing one or two from our round-up of the year's top games ; the list includes pricey options such as The Beatles: Rock Band ($60--$250) as well as more reasonable diversions, including Where's Waldo: The Fantastic Journey ($20--$30) and Scribblenauts ($30) . You can find them all at your local Game Stop.

If your original plans have been canceled due to the weather, we've got a bunch of ways for you to make the most of this white (almost) Christmas. Check out our roundup of the best sledding hills in the city , including a little-known Upper East Side slope . It's also a great day to ice-skate . Remember, the Pond at Bryant Park may be the only free rink in the city, but most of the others have very reasonable entry fees, including the brand-new temporary rink in Battery Park . If you're planning to build a snowman, we've got expert tips (seriously!) on how to make your Frosty particularly fabulous. Lastly, if your kid's too little (or too cold) to dig the snow, we have a roundup of indoor play spaces , organized by neighborhood. Whatever you do today, enjoy the winter...
