Toy Fair 2009 recap
Tue Feb 17
If you don't know what Toy Fair is, let me explain: Thousands of companies and vendors showcase their coolest new products so we media types can get a sneak peek. The event is not open to the public, unfortunately (or fortunately, as it would be even more of a madhouse than it already is), but I'm happy to share some scoop. Today was my first Toy Fair experience, and it was overwhelming to say the least. I noticed that a lot of "green" companies were showing this year, which I suspect is a new trend. I Heart My Planet toys created dolls made from organic cotton fabrics, while a new line from ImagiPLAY incorporates lead-free paint and eco-friendly wood into its products. Other highlights included Grease dolls from Madame Alexander (which, being a die-hard John Travolta fan, I could not resist), and Crayola's Window Crayons (I can imagine myself leaving notes for my roommates on our bathroom mirror with these). The surprises were endless, and I suspect your kids won't be...
Baby-faced British boy becomes a dad at age 13
Fri Feb 13
That's right folks, he's only 13 and he's already fathered a child. According to The Sun, Alfie Patten was 12 when he had unprotected intercourse with 15-year-old Chantelle Steadman, which led to the pregnancy. Steadman opted to keep the kid and voila, instant underage family. The video of the new parents fielding questions will make your jaw drop and your head shake. When asked how he will provide financially for his baby daughter, he replies, "What's 'financially'?" Clearly the grandparents are going to be the ones raising this kid, as these two are not ready to be parents themselves. Patten claims that he didn't know about the repercussions of having sex, but don't worry--his parents have promised to give him "the birds and the bees talk." Better late than never? Not in this case.

It's Friday the 13th! [Insert creepy horror movie music here.] It's a day for keeping alert, indulging your superstitious side and, of course, settling down for an evening of scary movies with your little ones (our recommendations are Monster Squad and Ernest Scared Stupid --more silly than scary, and appropriate for the younger set). Ever wonder about the history of the date? Check out these 13 facts about Friday the 13th , then impress your babes with your freaky factoids.
Indeed, a courageous campaign

Anyone who knows me realizes that I am probably one of the least political people you'll ever meet. I just haven't taken the time to really figure out my stance on a lot of issues and I find myself still conflicted between the ideals with which I was brought up and the beliefs I've developed in my transition to adulthood. However, if there is one thing I feel passionately about, it's gay marriage. I'm from California and I was in complete shock when Prop 8 passed last fall in my home state--supposedly one of the most liberal ones in the country. It's mind-boggling to think that two people who love each other still cannot be married solely because of their gender. It makes me angry and incredibly sad. Today, a friend of mine sent out a Twitter update with this amazing link : It's a petition against Ken Starr's legal brief "seeking to nullify the marriages of 18,000 same-sex couples solemnized before Prop 8 passed" as well as a video of a few of said couples pleading, "Please...
