Spend the day at the Time Warner Center

    Sat Jan 2

Now that winter is officially here, you're probably in desperate need of some indoor fun. While we have a great roundup of play spaces around the city , why not try a less obvious yet still family-friendly destination like the Time Warner Center ? Despite its upscale feel, there's plenty for kids to do, including storytime at Borders , free samples at Whole Foods Market and video games at the Samsung Experience . Click here for a complete roundup of attractions and to see our slide show. And if you can't make it this weekend, the urban mall's first ever Winterfest takes place next weekend, January 9-10, and features book readings, giveaways, restaurant samples and more. Friday's pick of the day: Coney Island Polar Bear Swim

    Fri Jan 1

What's the first word that comes to mind when you think about swimming in the Atlantic Ocean during winter? Probably insane . But watching others do it? Well that's genius. Head to Coney Island today to catch this NYC tradition, as adventurous locals dive into the water for the annual Polar Bear Club New Year's Swim . Kick back with your babes and a thermos of hot chocolate (and a picnic of Nathan's famous dogs, of course) and enjoy. Just make sure your kids don't try to join the fun.

    Doing the baby-stuff math

    Fri Jan 1

Ever stand at the changing table and think, "This must be the 1,000th poop I've cleaned up this year." You may actually be under estimating. The average couple changes 3,500 diapers in their baby's first 12 months! Enjoy more slightly frightening Year One stats in Small baby, lotsa crap , part of our January Baby issue , which is on sale (and online) now.

Free admission to the Brooklyn Museum on Saturday night

    Fri Jan 1

If you have resolved to spend less money and have more fun in 2010, here's an opportunity to prove you mean business. Tomorrow night is the Brooklyn Museum's first Target First Saturday of the year. That means tons of awesome cultural programming and free admission from 5--11pm. Late at night, the event turns into an adults-only affair, so we suggest going on the early side. Once inside, be sure to tour the museum's awesome exhibition, "Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present" (which closes at the end of the month), listen to live music (from 5 to 7pm) and take advantage of a waltzing workshop courtesy of Stepping Out studios at 6pm.
