New "floating" ice rink opens in Battery Park City
Thu Dec 10
Remember the Floating Pool of summer? Well, its winter equivalent has opened in Battery Park City: a mobile ice-skating rink . In addition to being portable, Battery Park City On Ice claims to be one of the most energy efficient rinks in the country, and offers hockey and skating lessons, birthday party packages and snacks at the Green Ice Cafe. It's open for skating and will offer special extended hours through the holidays.
High School Musical's Corbin Bleu joins In The Heights cast
Wed Dec 9
In the Heights is already one of the tween-friendliest musicals on Broadway. But beginning January 25, it's going to have even more appeal to that age group: Corbin Bleu—best known as adorable "Chad" from the High School Musical movies—will play the lead role of rapping bodega owner, Usnavi, for a 13-week run. To be honest, we're having a little trouble envisioning him in such a demanding, mature role. We also hope the Jamaican-Italian-American has boned up on his Spanish (the character hails from the Dominican Republic and occasionally breaks into his native tongue). But we'll remain positive. After all, In The Heights is pretty cheesy (in a good way), just like HSM . Photo: Joan Marcus
Wednesday's pick of the day: Wintuk
Wed Dec 9
One of the best things about the holidays are all of the seasonal shows that hit town. The problem is, you have to catch 'em quick before their short-lived runs end. So today, we're encouraging you to check out Wintuk by Cirque du Soleil, which follows a little boy on a magical journey to a snow-filled town. Kids will dig the oversize, goofy characters (especially those shaggy dogs!), the acrobatic routines and the whimsical paper flakes that descend during the finale.
Cheap time killer of the week: Kidtoons Movies
Tue Dec 8
It's true: You can go to the movies with your kids and not spend $50 on tickets and snacks. Granted, you won't be seeing Princess and the Frog , but exhausted parents can't be choosers, right? Kidtoons , a national organization dedicated to bringing child-friendly programming to theaters, is presenting Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas this month. The movie (which is available on DVD) will be shown along with two winter-themed episodes of one of our favorite Nickelodeon series, Olivia . Catch the program this Saturday and Sunday at noon at the Concourse Multiplex in the Bronx , the Linden Boulevard Multiplex in Brooklyn or at the Parkside Pavilion in Park Slope. Tickets are just $3.50 each. Every child will also receive a coupon exchangeable for a special kid-sized concession; you'll get a well-deserved rest.
