Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner welcomed a healthy baby girl earlier this week. Name to be released. Think she'll be as cute her older sis, Violet?

Parenting Poop: What Big Apple moms and dads are buzzing about

You can keep your ovaries, thanks These days, it's not surprising to see stuffed animals that aren't typical teddy bears. From pee and poo dolls to--we kid you not-- huggable viruses (our fave is the Ebola ), plush playthings come in the strangest shapes. While we understand the value of the aforementioned dolls as teaching tools for little ones (after all, you have to come in contact with urine, feces and bacteria), we a little freaked out by the uterus plush . Turns out the doll's just been recalled , since its detachable ovaries may be a choking hazard. Let's just say we won't be horribly upset if they never make it back on the market. Counter product-ive In February, new laws are set to go into effect that force stores that sell products to kids 12 to test all items, even clothing, for lead and phthalates, chemicals used to make plastics more pliable. The problem: Since the responsibility rests on the stores instead of the...

    Coney Island R.I.P

    Fri Jan 9

Coney Island January 2009 It's been common knowledge for a while now that the old-time, seedy charm of Coney Island was on its way out due to a massive re-developement plan. But the photos of the shuttered shops on the boardwalk plastered with for lease signs still comes as a shock to me. As easy as it is to rag on gentrification, the fact is, most folks (especially us parents) enjoy the benefits of a sleek, clean, amenity-laden neighborhood. And yet, as a native New Yorker who doesn't like change, I often find myself complaining bitterly about the trajectory of the city. That's when my 73-year-old mom (also born and bred in the Big Apple) shuts me down by saying, "The only thing that doesn't change about New York is the fact that it always changes." Still I can't help feeling like something is wrong in the city. Hard times usually inspire a certain amount of fight in its citizens, but right now, everyone I see just seems so tired. Yes, I know there have been Save Coney...

Give the gift of gift cards

    Fri Jan 9

I was too embarrassed to admit to it during the holidays, but when money and time were tight last month and I had to buy my daughter her eight Hanukkah gifts, I ran to CVS and grabbed a bunch of gift cards. (I wrapped them in different size boxes, but she caught on the third night.) Turns out this approach, which is often seen as lazy gift giving, actually works quite well, especially for kids. Here's why: 1. Kids like having their own money. Think about it. Money is one of the main things that gives us power over our them. They hate that. 2. It totally saves money. Usually when my daughter and I go shopping, I pay for everything. Not anymore. She's got gift cards! 3. It's a great math lesson. When my daughter bought a $22 T-shirt, I saw her checking the receipt to calculate what she had left. 4. Gift cards give you an obviously follow-up present: a wallet. 5. There's no end to the array of gift-card choices. Judging from the display at my local CVS, looks like I'm set for gifts...
