    Mommy Lit

    Fri Nov 16

As if you have time to read, USA Today has compiled a list of four books handpicked for the hardest working ladies out there. While some, such as The Accidental Mother by Rowan Coleman, are described as cliché and predictable, others such as Odd Mom Out by Jane Porter and The Other Mother by Gwendolen Gross, will entertain you and provide you with characters going through the very same madness you experience on a daily basis. From biker moms to substitute moms, there's something on the list you'll undoubtedly relate to. As you delve off into the world of alternate mommies, kids can catch up on their reading with some new picturesque animal books like these:http://www.timeout.com/newyork/kids/article/22471/animal-tales

Serendipity 3 shut down by Health Department

    Thu Nov 15

File this under GROSS: The Department of Health shut down dessert mecca Serendipity 3 after it miserably failed a second inspection. According to ABC news, "An inspector spotted a live mouse and mouse droppings, fruit flies, house flies and more than 100 live cockroaches" on Wednesday night. This isn't quite as bad as that time the Taco Bell in the Village was infested with rats, and we all had to see the photos over and over again. But still. Then again, we haven't been fans of Serendipity since we realized the minimum wait was usually over an hour. Seriously, the frozen hot chocolate isn't that good. For the best hot cocoa in the city, try one of these picks, instead.

Can I still see _______ on Broadway?

    Wed Nov 14

It's been four days and the Broadway stagehands are still on strike. But the real question is, "How does this affect you?" Well let's see, the Great White Way is dark with exception of eight shows (see the complete list here), and of those eight shows, only 3.5 are appropriate for kids. Say hello to Mary Poppins, Xanadu, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Young Frankenstein. But that's four shows, you say? Well, you're right, but Frankenstein is really only good for kids older than 10. If you're not thinking any of those options are so supercalifragilisticexpealidocious, keep in mind all off-Broadway shows are still open, as are many other kid-friendly performances. We've got a list of some of the best theater events in the city, just for you. You're welcome.
