Park Slopers must be rejoicing. There's a new bookstore in Brooklyn, powerHouse on 8th, and it happens to be at their doorstep, on Eighth Avenue between 11th and 12th Streets. Despite sustaining major damage at their Dumbo bookstore-gallery, powerHouse Arena, owners Susanne König and Daniel Power were able to open their second bookstore as planned, albeit a bit later than they'd intended. The good news for families is that there's a special corner for kids, who can browse books at tables and chairs, and the place is stocked with picture books, chapter books and YA fare in additional to a great selection of fiction and nonfiction adult titles. And starting in January, the shop will kick off a regular series of storytimes, which we'll get the word out on as soon as we're able. Check out our roundup of the 50 best books for kids and pick one or two up for your budding literary talent. A friendly menagerie of stuffed animals inhabits the kids' corner too, so if you notice some bonding going on, you may have yourself another great gift idea.
powerHouse on 8th is located at 1111 Eighth Ave between 11th and 12th Sts, Park Slope, Brooklyn (718-666-3049, ext 102; powerhouseon8th.com).
