Red Hook IKEA craze

File this under "You've got to be kidding me."

According to the New York Post, people have been camped out (yes, with tents) since Sunday outside the Ikea in Red Hook that won't open until tomorrow! Apparently the Wii-like waits are because the big box store is giving away a $399 couch to the first 35 people in line. Also of note to parents is that the first 100 kids in the store will receive a free toy--no word on what the toy is, but one would hope it'd be a good one.

Personally, I'd rather just buy the toy and not wait in line, but that's just me.

Do you think people are crazy to camp out for days for a cheap couch? Are you planning to visit Ikea on opening day?

If you want to make a day of crowd-surfing visiting Red Hook, I suggest heading to the Sol Goldman rec center nearby and letting your youngsters play in the overhead sprinklers. Admission to the outdoor pool is free.

Ikea opens Wednesday at 9am. Regular hours are 10am-10pm daily. 1 Beard St between Dwight and Columbia Sts, Red Hook, Brooklyn (718-246-4532, info.ikea-usa.com/Brooklyn). Travel: Take the F, D, M, R to  4th Ave/9th St, then take the free shuttle (which runs every 15 minutes) to Ikea.
