Summer Streets

Get outside and moving at Summer Streets, a citywide event taking place over three consecutive Saturdays (August 4, 11 and 18) from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park. Families can ride their bikes, walk or play on seven miles of car-free streets. Six rest steps located throughout the route have fun activities for New Yorkers to enjoy—everything from musical performances to a climbing wall. While all of the areas have something for little ones, the stops below are the best bets for families.

Foley Square Rest Stop
This pit stop is without a doubt the most kid-friendly of the bunch. Head down to Duane Street at Centre Street to check out the Family Play station courtesy of city sports complex Asphalt Green (11:30am--noon). The stop also features a free zip line station for more adventurous tykes. Little ones will also love the GoGo squeeZ Mobile Playground, a custom play area containing swings, slides, potato-sack races, arts and crafts and more. If kids need to take a breather, take in a concert by teen sister rockers Still Saffire (11am--11:30am) or a Double Dutch performance by the National Double Dutch League (noon--12:30pm).

Uptown Rest Stop
Located on 51st Street and Park Avenue, this rest stop will thrill little quarterbacks with a football toss station sponsored by youth fitness initiative NFL Play60. After, cool down at the fire hydrant sprinkler or nosh on treats courtesy of Visit Denmark.

Midtown Rest Stop
The activities on 25th Street and Park Avenue will encourage kids to finally ditch those pesky training wheels. Not only does this station feature free bike and rollerblade rentals for children to practice and show off their moves, but it also offers free Learn to Ride bike classes for tots hoping to transition to two-wheelers. Families in need of a lunch break can grab a bite to eat at the Whole Foods Market City Picnic Area on 24th Street.

Street closures include Park Ave from E 72nd St to 14th St, Fourth Ave and Lafayette St. View the map here. Aug 4, 11 and 18 7am--1pm (nyc.gov/dot).
