Time Out says

One of the major figures of postwar art in Germany, Penck was part of wave of Neo-Expressionist painters coming out of East Germany, a group that included Jörg Immendorff, Georg Baselitz and Markus Lüpertz. Penck's signature pictographic style, which features glyphlike stick men and other motifs recalling cave art or ancient murals, came to have a distinct impact on younger American artists such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. As its title suggests, this show rounds up paintings from the 1960s before he became well-known in the West.
