The exhibition is the first comprehensive survey in 25 years of the renowned Queens-born photographer. Lyon’s propensity to immerse himself in his subjects is often compared to approach taken by the New Journalists who transformed newspapers and magazine coverage in the 1960s. His work captured events related to the era’s most important developments, especially the Civil Rights struggle in the South, where he documented the activities of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). He was just as committed to photographing other marginalized segments of American society, among them, bikers, migrant workers and prison inmates. His images were caught on the fly as spontaneous moments, resulting in some of the most icon photos in the medium's history.
