The pastoral and apocalyptic mix in this Los Angeles artist's latest work: a kaleidoscopic multichannel video shot in the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, which catastrophically failed in 1986 in what was then the Soviet Union (today Ukraine). Thater alternates scenes of abandoned buildings in the ghost city of Prypiat—built to house workers at the complex—with views of the surrounding landscape, including the wildlife that seems to be flourishing in spite of radioactive contamination.
