Time Out New York: How did you get into art modeling?
Jesse Sposato: I was working in book publishing, then I lost my job at the beginning of the economic crisis. I was looking for something new to do. I went to an open-call model audition, and I've been modeling since then.
What's the high point?
Modeling is like yoga, meditation and exercise all in one; it's basically one of the only times I just allow myself to do nothing. When do you ever get to be still in New York City? It's really therapeutic.
What do you do other than model?
I spend most of my time outside of modeling working on Sadie magazine (sadiemagazine.com), an online counterculture mag geared toward young women. Our goal is to help ladies find their passions. I'm also a freelance writer, and I play in the bands Holy Hail and Ayatollah.
What's going on in your mind while you model?
Usually I'm thinking about my to-do list. Sometimes I replay situations over in my head—things like how I got the idea for a story I'm working on, or how I first met my boyfriend. Other times, I'll try to work out an idea. I've been writing a rough draft in my head. When class is over, I transport it to my computer. Sometimes at the very end of a pose, I start counting to 100 to make the time pass.
What are people's reactions when you tell them what you do?
Usually something like, "I would never do that." Getting naked in front of strangers is one of the most universally scary notions.
