It was 19th-century French poet and playwright Alfred Jarry who coined the term pataphysics, an absurdist philosophy that rejected the objective truths of empiricism and helped set the stage for Surrealism. The works in this show—by Ai Weiwei, Joseph Beuys and Marcel Duchamp—follow the logic of pataphysics, if one can call it that.
