Shore's photographs over the past 40-odd years have been characterized by their emphasis on what could be called the vernacular landscape. People going about their business and details of everyday life—some odd, some prosaic—fill his pictures, which seem to be part of a larger cultural narrative transpiring outside the frame. Shore's camera has ranged from the American West to a busy Manhattan corner, and in this show, it takes him to the conflict-roiled regions of Israel/Palestine and the Ukraine. In both, history and the land collide in images of the everyday haunted by the past.
