Photographs by four contemporary female artists from the Middle East—Boushra Almutawakel of Yemen, Shadi Ghadirian of Iran, Rania Matar of Lebanon and Reem Al Faisal of Saudi Arabia—explore various aspects of the region through the lens of gender and culture. Almutawake, for example, offers a series of color portraits of the same mother and daughter becoming more and more covered in dress from one image to the next, progressing from relatively revealing hijabs to all-enveloping burkas.
