The scale of Schütte’s figurative sculptures often equals the effigies of potentates and princes that dot Europe. But the renowned German artist has no use for monumentality: His subjects often seemed to be weighed down by the travails of history and burdens of memory. Another evident feature of his art is the wide variety of materials he works in—ceramics being a prominent example. The clay objects in this show, for example, are part of a series with the self-explanatory title “Eggheads.” They're joined by a group of large banners printed with etchings of seemingly random imagery.
