Valentin Carron, "Music is a s-s-serious thing"

A vague sense of anomie seems to drift through the Swiss artist's recent sculptures and paintings, which refer to music only occasionally. Two groups of works are on view. One consists of a series of found furniture pieces, draped with men's belts that have been elegantly cast in glass. The other comprises ink compositions on vinyl panels, stretched across a support of galvanized pipes joined at the corners. Their subjects range from figures to abstract designs, but all are borrowed from the dust jackets of old books. Taken as a whole, Carron's installation hints at some scenario of coming home, trying to get comfortable with a favorite tome, but somehow being unable to.
