It’s rare for potluck-throwers to invite the entire city, but that’s what’s happening at a community garden in the Bronx. Dishes aren’t set, but there’s a strong local Puerto Rican presence, so cross your fingers for barbecued pork or asopao, a gumbolike chicken-and-rice dish. The West Indian–American Day Carnival is an annual extravaganza of dancing, glittery headpieces, and standout Jamaican and Trinidadian food. Vendors along the route will ply you with grub like callaloo (root-vegetable-and-pork soup) and jerk chicken for about $5 a dish. West Indian–American Day Carnival.
