Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church
With its stained-glass windows, arched ceilings and spooky graveyard outside, St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery is a wonderful slice of East Village history.
Peter Jay Sharp Theater
The former Juilliard Theater is Lincoln Center’s secret weapon. This cozy wooden shell’s unobstructed sight lines suit dance perfectly.
New York State Theater
Created specifically for dance in 1964, the State Theater—which operagoers hate—is a literal jewel box for those who worship at the shrine of Balanchine.
Blights
Cedar Lake
Cedar Lake’s problem is the angle of the seats to the stage. By the end of the evening, your neck feels like it’s been caught in a vice.
P.S. 122
This institution retains a sentimental allure, but the columns in the middle of the stage? Not so good. And it needs a deep cleaning. A paint job. Some dignity.
Skirball Center for the Performing Arts
Perhaps this 850-seat theater needs one good site-specific work to lift it out of its doldrums, but the awkward Skirball is a drag, especially the two giant columns adorning its proscenium stage. Ugh.
