WHY ESSENTIAL:
With its premier programming (the Ian Curtis biopic Control closes Thursday 1 and the Dylan-approved I’m Not There debuts November 21) and rich repertory offerings (ranging from Hitchcock to Ousmane Sembene), this West Village theater is a veritable cine-oasis.

The secret:
“One of the benefits of donating to Film Forum at a ‘higher level’ is getting to dedicate a seat plaque to yourself or anyone you desire,” says programmer Mike Maggiore. “Two of my favorite seat plaques are located next to each other—specifically, in the second theater on your right, row 18, seats B and C: through the generosity of karl mundt, and in loving memory of doris crane. Both were donated by Frances McDormand and Joel Coen. Mundt is the name of John Goodman’s insurance salesman/psycho in Barton Fink, and Crane is the name of McDormand’s boozy, bingo-obsessed murder victim in The Man Who Wasn’t There.”209 W Houston St between Sixth Ave and Varick St (212-627-2035, filmforum.org)

  Josh, it is true. X is not on the menu. I am really upset that Time Out printed my secret website for everybody to see. gugunnameable is so secret, you can't even view it on a regular computer -- the secret password is www.unnameablebooks.net

  The concept of this piece, as described, is excellent; the execution is terrible and misleading (per the description, anyway–it would have been a fine article properly described). A tip would be, for example: "order X at Pearl Oyster Bar, it's not on the menu, it's excellent, and you have to request it." Or a reservation password or somesuch.
