Westsider Books
WHY ESSENTIAL:
A former Mexican bar, Westsider is a Hollywood fave; the store has appeared in You’ve Got Mail, Rescue Me and the upcoming Chapter 27. A browser’s dream, it’s stuffed to its ceilings with bookwormy treasures, and the atmosphere is laid-back enough that you can take your time combing through the stacks. And thank our lucky Pynchon, it’s open till midnight!
The secret:
There is a faux raven displayed prominently behind the counter. Literary types fancy it a Poe reference, but in reality, says owner-killjoy Bryan Gonzalez, it’s just a Halloween decoration they hung up four years ago and never got around to taking down. 2246 Broadway between 80th and 81st Sts (212-362-0706, westsiderbooks.com)

Josh, it is true. X is not on the menu.
I am really upset that Time Out printed my secret website for everybody to see. gugunnameable is so secret, you can't even view it on a regular computer -- the secret password is
www.unnameablebooks.net

The concept of this piece, as described, is excellent; the execution is terrible and misleading (per the description, anyway–it would have been a fine article properly described). A tip would be, for example: "order X at Pearl Oyster Bar, it's not on the menu, it's excellent, and you have to request it." Or a reservation password or somesuch.

How is this an "ultra-valuable tip?" It's not even a "tip," it's a piece of trivia.
