WHY ESSENTIAL:
Assuming you don’t break your neck on the way in, Hospital Productions is actually a pretty comfy place to shop. The staff at the East Village record store—only accessible via a steep ladder in the back of East 3rd Street reggae emporium Jammyland—won’t make you feel dumb if you’re not up on their stock: mostly extreme noise and underground black metal.
The secret:
“While it’s always nice to see our friends and comrades come to the store, we have to say that Matthew Barney is our most famous regular,” says owner Dominick Fernow. “Usually he buys a mix of black metal and death metal, but he also seems to be up on Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock, who are this Aktionist performance unit of self-described ‘psychophysical tests and training’ based out of Europe. They once played a show smashing their faces into miked plates of spaghetti and fired shotgun blanks into a stunned audience. The concept of this piece, as described, is excellent; the execution is terrible and misleading (per the description, anyway–it would have been a fine article properly described). A tip would be, for example: "order X at Pearl Oyster Bar, it's not on the menu, it's excellent, and you have to request it." Or a reservation password or somesuch.
