Unnameable Books
WHY ESSENTIAL:
Some say that Brooklyn is the city’s most literary borough. And where do all of those well-read people take their excellent used books? To Unnameable, of course, just around the corner from the inflammatory Atlantic Yards. With a cluttered, top-shelf inventory that could keep you reading great tomes for the next decade, this is a definite boon to Brooklyn’s literati.
The secret:
The Unnameable staff collects and posts items they find tucked inside traded books. Quirky discoveries include a 19th-century advertisement for Perry & Co.’s Patent Aromatic Elastic Bands, an Echo & the Bunnymen concert ticket from 1988 and an index card scrawled with the words it’s a mental image of something you’ve already perceived. Just a few weeks ago, owner Adam Tobin found a stranger’s high-school portrait inside a book. He’s now using it as a bookmark. 456 Bergen St between Fifth and Flatbush Aves, Park Slope, Brooklyn (718-789-1534, gugunnameablebooks.net)

Kiosk is hilarious. They were selling a package of dried plums for $15 that you can find 3 blocks south at hong kong supermarket for $2.

Josh, it is true. X is not on the menu.

The concept of this piece, as described, is excellent; the execution is terrible and misleading (per the description, anyway–it would have been a fine article properly described). A tip would be, for example: "order X at Pearl Oyster Bar, it's not on the menu, it's excellent, and you have to request it." Or a reservation password or somesuch.

How is this an "ultra-valuable tip?" It's not even a "tip," it's a piece of trivia.
