Noir author Jason Starr says that if his books have a recurring character, it’s New York City itself. When we asked him to name other novelists who capture Gotham’s peculiar rhythms, he gave us a list of his ten favorites. Considering Starr’s penchant for amoral characters, it’s no surprise that many of the authors below infuse Manhattan with a sociopathic energy.
1. City of Glass, by Paul Auster
2. Found in the Street, by Patricia Highsmith
3. Little Girl Lost, by Richard Aleas
4. Glamorama, by Bret Easton Ellis
5. The Devil’s Mambo, by Jerry A. Rodriguez
6. Eddie’s World, by Charlie Stella
7. Players, by Don DeLillo
8. Before I Die, by Lionel White
9. Hide Your Eyes, by Alison Gaylin
10. The Angry Ones, by John A. Williams
