Pianist Jean-Michel Pilc likes to test the idea of structure. In the past, he’s given his compositions names that end in Suite or Sonata, but he’s also described himself as a “music emitter” who trusts his unconscious much more than “preconceived musical goals, intentions and concepts.” It’s hard to argue with his subconscious’s choices when he’s soloing; Pilc’s thundering runs can cram as much density into a few bars as John Coltrane did reeling off his famed sheets of sound. But by contrast, New Dreams (Dreyfus Jazz), the pianist’s forthcoming trio album, seems like his most reflective yet. Before Pilc begins promoting it in earnest, though, he’s revisiting past alliances engineered for jazzy globalism. Cardinal Points, his band with slippery altoist Sam Newsome, will be at Smalls, while Pilc is opposite Cameroonian bassist-singer (and former Harry Belafonte group bandmate) Richard Bona at 55 Bar.
