Guggenheim Soho
The Hugo Boss Prize 1996 nominee exhibit
After a decade in Japan, Cai moves to New York and—with temporally dislocating speed—finds himself showing in a major museum. Within a year of his arrival, he is nominated for the Guggenheim’s first Hugo Boss Prize. For the accompanying exhibit showcasing Boss nominees (including once and future stars Laurie Anderson, Matthew Barney and Yasumasa Morimura), Cai makes Cry Dragon/Cry Wolf: The Ark of Genghis Khan, from 108 sheepskins, three Toyota engines, paddles, rope and magazine clippings. Cry Dragon/Cry Wolf goes from the Guggenheim Soho straight into the museum’s permanent collection, to be polished up and showcased again in the current show. Perhaps more importantly, Guggenheim heavy Thomas Krens is a member of the prize jury; he will eventually become Munroe’s cocurator on Cai’s retrospective.
