“Cai Guo-Qiang: Head On”
Head On, now installed on a stretch of ramp in the rotunda, was originally a solo show unto itself. Munroe says that when she went to Berlin to see it, “we knew on the spot that we wanted it." Though it could have easily been reconfigured for a side gallery, Munroe and her colleagues preferred the iconic rotunda as the final placement. Notes Munroe, “It uses the ramps in a way they have rarely been used before.” (Krens, showing off his long memory, says it reminds him of a 1979 Joseph Beuys installation, “with survival sleds spilling out the back of a VW van, trailing down the ramp.”)
