    Sights & Blights

    Storefronts: Sights

How many do you see in a day? Enough to know that they make up a big chunk of the city’s aesthetic landscape. Forget inner beauty: Long live the shops with a pretty face—and fie on those garish others!

    Sights

    1 Gray’s Papaya
    2 The Strand Bookstore
    3 Union Square Greenmarket
    4 Curry Row
    5 The Apple Store
    Sights 6–10

    Gray’s Papaya

We are not even going to try to convince you that this chain of wiener mongers is actually attractive. Its stores are chintzy, crowded and seedy. But chances are that the mere mention of them has gotten your mouth watering. When you see that warm papaya-yellow glow at the 4am tail end of a bar crawl, you feel like a colicky baby who’s just spotted his mother’s nipple after a long wailathon.

View all of our storefront picks (at least one location) on a Google map.
